Inside the story

The premise

The Algorithm of Truth returns to Neuropolis, where the Truth Exchange makes memories and narratives objects of trade. The ability to buy, circulate or revise an account of events becomes a form of power over the world people share.

Humphrey, the auditor Geraldine and Marge the cat confront a system that can rewrite reality. Their predicament asks what remains of independent judgment when the evidence of experience can be reorganised to serve someone else.

Themes to explore

  • Truth as a commodity: what happens when the value of a memory depends on who can trade it.
  • Authorship and power: the ability to impose a narrative on other people’s lives.
  • Memory and judgment: the difficulty of testing a claim when its supporting reality can change.
  • Resistance and absurdity: confronting systems whose rules distort the conditions of disagreement.

What to expect

A satire of memory markets, manufactured narratives and the institutions that benefit from them. The author’s synopsis places familiar Neuropolis characters inside a struggle over who gets to determine what counts as real.
